SMART Spelling
SMART Spelling by Michelle Hutchison is an outstanding resource our school adopted in 2017.

We wanted to differentiate spelling but also manage a simple daily spelling routine. I went to see Michelle speak about Dyslexia (which was excellent) and she spoke briefly about her spelling program. It sounded similar to what we’d been doing in the past with our ‘Spelling Patterns’ work (see the LSNCWC page) but MUCH more expertly put together. So I went back to my school and pushed for her spelling inservice for our whole staff which we did in late 2017. It was brilliant! Michelle was brilliant! So sensible, so achievable, so coherent, and we’ve adopted the approach right across the school.
I do recommend getting to a SMART Spelling PD or doing the online course, then getting stuck into the SMART Spelling book. There are also materials to support oral language, early years and strong links to writing. Like all programs, teachers tweak it to suit their needs and below are the weekly sheets our level use with the kids in Grade 3/4.
