Reading
This is why Pinterest makes good professional development! Saw a 'Real Reading vs Fake Reading' idea on Pinterest and used it with my 3/4s this year. (2016) First days of school I watched their 'read to self' behaviour then wrote everything I saw up on the whiteboard. As a class we discussed this and added input from the kids. Then I got them to split the behaviours into 'Real' and 'Fake' reading. From my messy whiteboard work, we made this poster. (Another example of drafting then publishing.) When presenting it to the kids, I talked about the significant use of colour and we hung it in a prominent place in the room. We refer to it often now, sometimes as a whole class reminder before we begin reading, sometimes I'll just ask a child to come to the poster with me privately and we'll talk about what they've been doing and what that means. It's also a great poster when other teachers are in the room as it immediately sets up the group expectations.
