Poetry
I've always loved lots of poetry for the classroom. We always used rhymes and poems as part of teaching the alphabet with the little kids. The rhyme and rhythm is so appealing - especially for someone who can't sing! The big kids really get into the humour that goes over the little kids' heads.
Smartboards have enabled me to put 'em all into powerpoints for lots of whole class sharing!
Some of the next two poetry books have been added before, but we had great success with them this year (2014) in Grade One, so I wanted to add them (there's a few new ones in them too).
At the beginning of the Grade One year, during Daily 5, students were having difficulty reading independently and with a partner, simply because they didn't have a enough material that they could actually read (as opposed to browsing through magazines that they're champions at and some of the big books that they remembered from prep). So I put together multiple copies of a 12 page poetry book that only had 4 line poems in them and we did lots of whole class work chanting them first so the kids would learn them quickly. They're particularly appealing poems (ie funny!) and because their length was 4 lines, the kids learnt them quickly. Poetry quickly became one of the favourite Daily 5 options. About half way through the term, we introduced the puppets to this option, so the kids would have the puppets performing the poems. Enter characterization, weird voices and lots of silliness. The kids became so good at the poems that they performed them as an assembly item. We're now on to our 2nd poetry book - again restricted to 4 line poems - and the kids are loving these ones too.Read to Someone Poetry 1 (12 page word doc) Read to Someone Poetry 2 (14 page word doc)

I have to recommend...
This is a great site full of free, funny, modern poetry, written by people who know kids well and have their same twisted sense of humour! It's great and very kid friendly.
